Training for Health and Social Care

At 4 Mental Health we believe that a new narrative is required for clients in emotional distress, with a move away from ‘characterising, quantifying and managing risk’, to a more robust focus on ‘compassion, a person-centred assessment and safety planning’. This vital paradigm shift places emphasis upon identifying a person’s individual risk factors, needs and strengths, instilling hope and empowering clients to seek and accept support. Our approach ensures high quality care to those at risk of self-harm and/or suicide, as every encounter should be regarded as an opportunity to intervene, reduce distress and potentially save a life.

We fully understand that professionals working within health and social care sectors hold a critical role within suicide prevention and have purposefully developed training with clinical and assessment tools, to meet the specific needs of staff working within these often demanding, time pressured service provision environments.

Our Connecting with People training modules combine compassion and governance to improve individual emotional resilience, increase empathy, reduce stigma and enhance participants ability to provide a safe, compassionate and appropriate response to clients experiencing suicidal thoughts and/or self-harm.

Our recognised Suicide Assessment Framework E-Tool (SAFETool™) is included within our Suicide Response modules and is suitable for busy professionals with assessment roles. SAFETool™ is available in a number of formats; paper copy, electronic editable pdf, Web App and a number of common clinical system templates. Used in conjunction with our training, SAFETool™ provides a comprehensive suicide mitigation approach designed to:

Improve the assessment and documentation of people at risk of suicide and/or self-harm.

Provide effective client-centred intervention practices and techniques.

Support the development of a common language, promoting a more integrated response across statutory services, third sector providers and communities.

Provide a clear structure for the recording of client information, to ensure excellent governance
Ensure compassionate engagement, tailored triage assessment, appropriate referral and client collaboration
Minimise the anxiety and emotional labour for staff when addressing the mental health concerns of others.

Suicide cannot be accurately predicted and Connecting with People training promotes the paradigm shift away from ineffective attempts to predict risk at an individual level, often as a means of allocating or excluding from care, to the adoption of a compassionate, holistic, trauma-informed and collaborative approach.

Connecting with People training uses a compassionate approach to learning, that is pragmatic and suitable for busy, time-poor services and community groups. We focus on the delegate experience which is immersive, empowering, inclusive and values based.

Our training style uses facilitation, lecture-style presentation, open discussion and group-work to remove unconscious barriers, improve compassion, knowledge and confidence.

We’re received considerable national and international recognition for our Connecting with People training and are delighted that a significant number of NHS, PHE and council organisations across the UK, as well as parallel organisations internationally have successfully adopted our approach.

All training materials have been peer-reviewed by our international Expert Reference Group and underpinned by evidence-based principals, the latest research, best practice and invaluable input from those with lived experience.
